GEO 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Gully, Suspended Load, Dissolved Load
Document Summary
The impact of fluvial processes on the landscape: fluvial processes involve running water, running water is earth"s most important external agent, ubiquitous (everywhere except antarctica) Stream orders: first order stream, smallest stream, has no tributaries, second order, begins at confluence of 1st order streams, third order, begins at confluence of 2nd order streams. Overland flow erosion: splash erosion, raindrop impact loosens material, vegetation reduces impact, sheet erosion, rill erosion, gravity moves water downslope, creating rills tiny channels, digs deeper, gully erosion, clearly defined, eventually become stream channels. Erosion by streamflow: hydraulic power excavates and transports, water volume, more water, more power, flow speed, slope will increase speed, stream load, abrasive material carried in water, rounded particles. Stream load: dissolved load, carried in solution, suspended load, not dissolved, but move without touching bed, bedload, saltation, skips or bounces, traction, slides or skids.
