Document Summary

Learning objectives: define what a print is and discuss its earliest uses, characterize relief processes in printmaking, characterize intaglio processes in printmaking, describe the lithographic process and its invention, describe the silkscreen process. The language of printmaking: a print is an image printed from an engraved plate, wooden block, or similar surface. History of printmaking: before paper was widely used, pictorial designs were still printed onto fabric, gutenberg invented the printing press in the 15th century and printmaking soon followed. Printing processes: relief: relief refers to any printmaking process in which the image to be printed is raised from the background in reverse. In linocut, the block is made of linoleum instead of wood. Rather than portraying the reality of sharecroppers in conditions of slavery, Catlett shows a determined, strong figure representative of a commitment to social change. Watch youtube demo to understand how the intaglio process works.
