Held constant to explore the relationship between the independent and dependent variable. People may behave differently as a result of being studied. People may behave in unpredictable ways- intentionally or otherwise. Human behavior is complex, making causation hard to determine. Ethical concerns forbid the use of some experiments on humans. The sociologist is part of the subject they"re studying. Cannot have parents abuse children to see the effects on learning. Subset of the population that represents the entire population.
