Foundation of the first laboratory of experimental psychology in germany: The university reform in germany: first, universities in germany were dominated by humanities & religion, pietism: protestant movement, promoting revival of practical & devout christianity, based on spiritual rebirth & advocating charitable & missionary work. School system was reorganised, new university model was installed. Scientific research became part of academic career with own financing. This type of university rapidly expanded over entire germany: german universities became dynamic & open to new areas for scientific investigation. By end of 19th century, germany was one of the front-runners in industrial revolution, attracting students from all over the world. Wundt & the first laboratory of experimental psychology: Wundt"s career: wilhelm wundt (1832-1920), studied medicine & made his phd, had an assistantship with hermann von helmholtz ( who had started to measure speed of signal transmission in nerves)
