He had many different projections; his most famous is probably the mercator projection. It is used by modern day google maps. Mollweide projection - equal area projection, meridians are curved. Peters projection - cylindered-equal area, meridian are straight but shapes are more distorted than mollweide. Interrupted mollweide - chopped up globe that is flattened onto a 2-d object. Goode"s homolosine projection - preserves relative area and limits distortion of shape. Dymaxion map/fuller map - projection is an icosahedron that is unfolded and flattened onto a 2-d object. Three main type of projections: cylindrical projection, conic projections, azimuthal or planar projections. The globe is wrapped by a cylinder with the equator touching the cylinder. The mercator projection is probably the most famous cylindrical projection. Some problem of distortion, especially in the mercator projection, are size and shape. Mercator projection, the closer you get to the poles, the more distortion there will be.
