BIOSC-139 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Surface Tension, Asthma, Red Blood Cell
Document Summary
Most common asthma is an allergic reaction to something that is in the atmosphere. Allergic reaction centers itself in terminal & respiratory bronchioles. What happens is contraction of smooth muscle restriction of the air ways something in the airways that shouldn"t be there inflammatory response increasing mucus production. 2 problems contraction of smooth muscles & increase in mucus production. The common therapy for someone with asthma should always have an inhaler with them albuterol [bronchiole dilator smooth muscle relaxer] & other component is an anti-inflammatory [to reduce amount of mucus] One basic requirements that respiratory system needs is the respiratory membrane. Pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood into the lungs. Between the tubing is respiratory membrane in form of alveoli. Adjacent alveoli have lining of each & loose connective tissue find capillaries. Between wall of alveoli & capillary is basement membrane. Oxygen diffuses across simple squamous, basement membrane, simple squamous into plasma & then attaches to iron in erythrocyte.
