Document Summary

Atoms are the building blocks of all matter. Everything is made up of atoms the air you breath, the ground you walk on, and you. Atoms: the basic unit of matter (module 3) Made up of subatomic particles called: protons, neutrons, electrons. Protons have a plus sign (+) indicating their positive electrical charge. Neutrons are electrically neutral, neither positive or negative. Both of these make up the nucleus or the center of the atom. Because both the proton and neutron are in the nucleus, it makes it a positive charge. Electrons have almost no mass and found outside the nucleus, in zones that are called shells. Note: when the number of protons equals the total number of electrons, then the atom is electrically neutral. If the number of electrons differs from the number of protons, then the atom has an electrical charge.
