Democracy: when the people as a whole have the sovereign power, fundamental laws, the right to vote, votes should be public, the people alone should make laws, virtue: without it, ambition ad avarice enters people"s hearts. Virtue includes love of the homeland, desire for true glory, self-renunciation, sacrifice of one"s dearest interests (p. 25) One can define this virtue as love of the laws and the homeland. This love, requiring a continuous preference of the public interest over one"s own, produces all the individual virtues; they are only that preference. (p. 36) Love of the republic in a democracy is love of democracy; love of democracy is the love of equality. Love of democracy is also love of frugality. (p. 43)
