Early gothic cathedrals and the birth of gigantism in gothic architecture. The beautiful buildings were made possible by the travelling and exchange of ideas. Canterbury the anlgo-norman church extended 1174+ monastery cathedral: harmony and concordance: fitting in the new with the pre-existing old, the two things; monastery and cathedral do not have much in common. Monks, pilgrims, laypeople: characteristic of english cathedrals very very long. Lot of potential conflict between the authority of the monks and the authority of the archbishop: the choir stalls in canterbury was built for the monks. The reaction of the monks how the monks were prostrate with grief that the choir be set on fire. The columns were alternating circular/octagonal piers to console the monks. When exposed to heat, the stone will be damaged and cracked breaking. The columns must be replaced to allow the building to stay in place. France and english are highly conscious of each other: france 12th c.
