Argued for what was rational for a society to agree to: science. Observed rise of new theory replacing the old one. Dominated by notion of bodies of motion. Goal was to resolve society and then reconstruct based on the component parts. Inertia: understood that everything in the universe starts in motion. Used to describe processes in humans that they are not conscious of but are require to be alive. Unaware of these processes until something brings your attention to it: voluntary. Either motion towards (desires) or motion away (aversions) Included change over time for the same person. Used to describe the object of desire: evil. Used to describe objects of aversion: created a subjective view of values. Talked in moral terms but actually only described how objects were being used. Good and evil differed for different people. Tried to find universal goods: self-preservation. Being alive is a precondition for anything else.
