ANAT 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Glossopharyngeal Nerve, Cholinergic, Adrenal Gland
Document Summary
Somatic = sensory and motor neurons - related to touch, pain, temperature, proprioception, sight, hearing, taste, smell, equilibrium. Sympathetic: fight or flight/survival - can lead to increased alertness and metabolism to be ready for an emergency. Parasympathetic: rest and digest - kicks in when you"re sitting around and eating/relaxing - stimulation slows down most body activity. Blood goes to gut and visceral organs for digestion. Why you shouldn"t really eat and then exercise or swim because you want the blood going to your gut, not your muscles!! Dilating blood vessels in gut and also dilate blood vessels in muscles and your blood flow will drop dramatically and could pass out or cramp up. Autonomic pathways usually have 2 motor neurons that go to effectors: o. Pre-ganglionic neuron: axon leaving the spinal cord is before it reaches a ganglion - found in lateral horn of grey matter and goes through ventral root and synapses on autonomic ganglion - myelinated! o.
