Female client reports that she can"t stand her mother-in-law. But she keeps having dreams of spending time with her. No association found between toilet training and adult personality. Defense mechanisms don"t hold up in scientific research. Example: we don"t repress negative memories, in fact, we are no more likely to forget negative events than happy events. Freud criticized: #3 questionable conception of the unconscious. There is some evidence for the influence of subliminal (out of our awareness) stimuli. Participants walked slower after being subliminally primed with words associated with old age. But freud conceptualized the subconscious as a place from which our sexual and aggressive impulses exist beneath awareness. He studied a small group of people and said his theories applied to all humans.
