Three ways to encode: elaborative encoding: Relate new info to already known knowledge: visual imagery encoding: A picture is worth a 1,000 words": organizational encoding: Categorize info according to the relationship among items. Sensory memory: holds sensory info (sights and sounds for a few seconds or less) Short-term memory (aka working memory"): holds non-sensory info for more than a few seconds, but less than a minute. Long-term memory: holds info for hours, days, weeks, years. Duration: up to 1 second: echoic memory: Keeping info in short-term memory by mentally repeating it. Active maintenance of info in short-term memory. Can recall items from long-term memory even if they haven"t thought of them for years.
