Document Summary

Epistemic privilege as creating a privileged view of reality. Oppressed and marginalized groups are able to experience oppression firsthand that others often cannot (ie. white flight in the south after the outlaw of redlining) Lack of upward mobility for marginalized groups as a product of: Property taxes pay for education (lower income areas get bad schools) Bad schools generate an achievement gap between groups. This gap in achievement leads to disparities in income, furthering the cycle. Hard to see and understand the nuances and interactions of this system without being in it (in simpler terms, poverty charges interest) Correlations between minorities, poverty, violence, and lack of intelligence reinforce patterns of poverty which those who are not in poverty cannot see (ie. the just do ____ argument is completely useless) These are things that we can only see in the experience; experience lends insight. Never assume that you get it ; be able to listen without resistance.
