HIST 4031 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Flavian Dynasty, Greco-Persian Wars, Roman Citizenship
Document Summary
Panhellenism is the belief that all of the greeks cities should unite in order to conquer the persia. However, this theory could never come to fruition without the help of a very strong leader to hold them all together. The spartan king agesilaus fails, phillip fails, alexander succeeds (half-greek). Panhellenism was more than just an excuse to conquer for many greeks (thebans disagree) and it saved greece from ultimate destruction. The pan hellenic ideology was popular and widespread in order to save greece. The ideology makes persia the common enemy in order to unite greece and end the civil war. Macedonians also wanted revenge against the persians because of the trojan war. Macedonia didn"t fight in the persian wars of 490 it there is no way the macedonians are greek. Phillip and alexander both believe they are descendants from heracles, the greek mythological benefactor who slayed all the monsters to save the greeks.
