Document Summary

Ro(cid:373)e"s e(cid:272)o(cid:374)o(cid:373)(cid:455) flourished due to this i(cid:374)flu(cid:454) of sla(cid:448)es. The(cid:455) became a surplus economy and began exporting their goods. Slaves were used as tools, not thought of as humans. They worked twice the hours of free laborers. People were concerned that the slave economy was too large and that the slaves would form an army and revolt. Rome did not do a good job of preventing this from happening, slaves were in charge of slave farms. This influx of slavery also increased poverty and overpopulated the city. Slavery was not racial in rome, it was solely based on whether or not you were a citizen of rome (the original 300 square mile radius). Manumission is when slaves are set free without buying their freedom. Slaves however could never earn the same rights as roman slaves even upon their release from bondage (particularly no voting) but could still earn an honest living.
