Document Summary

This marks the beginning of the fall of the republic. The senate begins to lose its checks and balances system. The rostra becomes more of a political hub. There was new reported in the forums such as court cases and legionary movements. Senators began to put hit lists of other senators up around town. They would also put ads for their agendas all over town. Around this time, people begin to question the cursus honorum and the entire electoral system. Scipio africanus, the war hero from both macedonian/punic wars is the man everybody wanted for consul. However, he was too young and had not served several positions in the cursus honorum. He caused major conflicts in the senate and senators attempted to cast lots to kick him out of rome. The people elect scipio for consul even though he is ineligible. The politicians had officially lost control of the mob.
