Document Summary

There was an overthrow but it is unclear if everything in the story is real (other than brutus). The overthrow happened to the violation of xenia. Xenia is when romans open up their homes and provide hospitality for a weary traveler. In return, the traveler is supposed to respect the home, respect it! In this instance, the king tarquinius superbus was the weary traveler and needless to say he did (cid:374)ot (cid:396)espect the ho(cid:373)e. ta(cid:396)(cid:395)ui(cid:374) (cid:396)aped the host"s (cid:449)ife luc(cid:396)etia a(cid:374)d th(cid:396)eate(cid:374)ed to kill he(cid:396) if she told anybody. Lucretia was the perfect housewife until that moment. She told her husband but she felt her body was forever ruined and killed herself. The oligarchy then proceeds to overthrow the king (read rape of lucretia notes for more info). The romans replace the king with assemblies of about 100 people. Filled with the richest people, they made all the important decisions.
