Latin rhythms provided an alternative to straight-up shuffling. Shares the 1/8 note rhythmic layer with rock. Mardi gras in new orleans fats domino (1953) Fats domino"s career illustrates the deepening white interest in r&b as the 50s wore on. Clave rhythm layered with r&b rhythms creates dense, complex texture. Hugely influential yet had no major commercial success. Most notable contribution in the bo diddley beat (similar to clave rhythm but with its roots inferentially rooted in african tradition called patting juba ) All about rhythm (song has one chord throughout) Fusions of gospel harmonies, pop styles, r&b rhythms and form, and scat singing. Many male groups a capella so that the scat syllables gave rhythmic content as well as harmonic support to the words.
