Of the first wave of rock and r&b stars, only elvis and fats domino charted regularly. Conservative white music was the mainstream with r&b and r&b existing on the fringe. Radio stations that regularly played r&r were rare. R&r aroused hostile reactions from much of the population, even youth. Elvis was censored on the ed sullivan show and only shown from the waist up; censors claimed his moves were too vulgar for network tv. Materialism, conspicuous consumption, an abiding faith in never ending prosperity. War was very fresh in people"s minds (wwii, korea) Tv became the main source of news, information and entertainment, catered to majority tastes. American hypocrisy became apparent during/after wwii, with blacks fighting side by side with whites and everyone, ironically, fighting for their freedom. Advertising explodes in this era, because everyone now has a tv and radio and ads were what paid for the programming.
