Pre-wwii, jazz was played by large ensembles for entertainment (commercialized) Musicians hired to cater to the audience"s tastes. Jam sessions a smaller, more informal environment where musicians would gather and improvise / create music together. Ani-entertainment jazz was an arisic medium through which musicians could express themselves. He and parker commonly based tunes on chord changes from popular songs. Chord subsituions using an unusual chord in the place of a standard chord. The music doesn"t swing anymore; totally diferent feel. Manteca [fat/buter/lard] was a code for drugs (marijuana/heroin) Monk was an iconoclast challenged what everyone believed / cherished about jazz. Musicians loved him, but record labels were hesitant to hire him. Small group, abstract, angularity, lots of dissonance, everyone solos. Lighter and more relaxed sound than bebop, but sill complex and cerebral. Birth of the cool (1957) album changed the game of jazz. Dizzy"s style was hot fast, high, loud. Davis" style was cool laid-back, economical, calculated.
