Direct assessment: observe or record behavior as it occurs. Steps to a behavior modification: define target behavior, determine logistics of recording, choose a recording method, choose a recording instrument. Clear and precise definition of target behavior. Does not refer to internal states (which cannot be observed) Interobserver reliability (ioa): aka interobserver agreement --> two people independently observe the same behavior and both record that the behavior occurred. Target behavior is typically observed by someone other than the individual displaying the behavior --> a professional or someone in the client"s life. Self-monitoring: when a client observes and records the target behavior in themselves. Observation period: a specific period of time in which the observer records target behavior.
