Introduction to Syntax and Lexical Categories
- What is syntax?
o Syntax is the linguistic study of grammar
o Grammar is the set of rules for building a sentence
- What is a sentence?
o A unit of language the contains a full, conceptualized thought
o Must have some subject and a predicate
▪ Subject: who or what is the sentence about
▪ Predicate: everything else, what did they do
- Lexical Categories
o Group of words in a particular language that function similarly in grammar
o Open Class
▪ Noun – can refer to persons, places, things, ideas, real or imagined, events,
and actions
• Examples: animation, giraffe, monster, table, Disneyland, joy,
person, happiness, attention, paper, teacher
▪ Verb – can refer to actions, events, processes, and states of being
• Examples: throw, love, danced, jump, will, is, hope, looked, eats,
signing, typing
• Auxiliary verbs – helping verbs
o Examples: WILL go, IS clapping
▪ Adjective – are words that modify and describe nouns
• Examples: happy, deep, hard, giant, green, tiny, fluffy, looked,
silent, stable, bubbly
