Ontology- the study of human nature, or what it means to be a person. Positivist tradition- researchers believing in the idea that you can study communication best by discovering, verifying and observing it as an object, existing independently of human volition or freewill. Positivist language and determinism- social behavior caused by external forces, and there is nothing that you can do about it. This is me, this is who i am. Humanistic tradition- we are what we are because of the choices we make, focusing on examining people"s choices by interpreting the signi cance of expressions, and accounts or stories. Teleological position- idea of free agency in communication, advocating that you are living your relational life deliberately. Constructivism- communication is a subjective creation or invention. Social constructions- social norms or taken-for-granted assumptions about what is allegedly natural, acceptable and real. Creating social reality- how we construct social reality by making up and using words as well as texting jargon.
