Bitch -> same word but evokes different emotions. Meanings are in the people, not in the word itself. Meaning comes from people, not everyone gets the same meaning. Different meaning depending on the context, or using different words in various contexts. Culture influences what words we can/cannot use, and the meaning of some words. Symbolic interaction theory: meaning is created through interaction with symbols and with others. Theory of linguistic determinism/relativity (a. k. a the sapir-whorf hypothesis): Ex. a lot of reading -> how much is a lot? . Focus on your own feelings and identify the effects of the behavior. Proper way: give a detailed account of the situation, acknowledge the hurt or damage caused, take responsibility. How to maximize the effectiveness of compliments specificity target = insecure or uncertain: credibility/believability. 3: selectivity, not for the sake of politeness, if possible. The person will live up to the behavior of the compliment.
