Refers to the system by which a society categorize people in a hierarchy and creates strata- or social layers within a society. Greater access to goods and services the higher you go. Multiple group memberships affect our lives in ways that are distinct from single group memberships. Concepts to identify how different categories of inequalities (ex. Class: defined as one"s position in relation to the means of production. You either own the means of production or you don"t. Class: a large group of people who hold similar opportunities, economic and vocational positions, lifestyles, attitudes and behavior. Cares about wealth, power and prestige together. If 3 categories are on the same level, then it is category consistent. If the 3 categories are not equal (high in wealth but low in power and prestige) then it is category inconsistent. Functionalism: davis and moore; the functions of stratification. Competition helps push society to a better place.
