SOC 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Glyphosate, Environmental Health, Animism
Document Summary
In preindustrial societies: rituals practiced 40,000 years ago, embraced animism , elements of the natural world are conscious life forms that affect. Environmental problems are largely a result of our attitudes, beliefs, and values. People live within this world and its constraints, but they do so in terms of how they understand and define it. People recognize the natural world and environment in very different ways. Natural environment: the earth"s surface and atmosphere including living organisms, air, water, soil, and other resources necessary to sustain life. Ecosystem: a system composed of the interaction of all living organisms and their natural environment. Environmental deficit: profound and long-term harm to the natural environment caused by humanity"s focus on short term material affluence. Humans are unique among the earth"s creatures because of culture. Culture can vary almost infinitely: can change much more rapidly than biological traits.
