Binge eating + compensatory behaviors(eg. throwing up) Belief that popularity and self-esteem are determined by weight and body shape. Most are within 10% of normal weight. Sense of lack of control over eating during the episode. (pushed by nega feelings) Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior in order to prevent weight gain. At least 2x a week for 3 months. Onset = age 16 to 19 late adolescent. Problems with interpreting their internal states: emotions. Highly variable moods: most time negative, low serotonin-aggressive. Impulsiveness or weak impulse control: negative affect, behavior inhibition. Begins 14-18, evidence of picky eating in childhood. Anorexia: usually starts as bulimia, then goes to anorexia nervosa. North american minority populations,immigrants to western cultures: African american no problem with eating disorder, close connection within family. Binge-eating/purging - of adolescents with anorexia fall into this group, not huge amount of food as bulimia, overboard purging.
