Definition (aka anxiolytic means anxiety reducing)-produce feelings of relaxation and drowsiness. Barbiturates- addictive sedative hypnotic drugs that reduce anxiety and help produce sleep. Benzodiazepines-most common group of anti-anxiety drugs, which includes valium and xanax. Definition-includes opium-taken from the sap of the opium poppy (drugs derived from it such as heroin, morphine, and codeine. Opium-been in use for thousands of years; used widely in the treatment of medical disorders because of its ability to reduce physical and emotional pain. Eventually they discovered that the drug was physically addictive. Morphine-relieved pain better than opium did and initially was considered safe (but can lead to addiction) Heroin-for years viewed as a wonder drug and was used as cough medicine and other medical purposes; however, more addictive than other opioids. Narcotics-all these opioid drugs (synthetic and natural) are known as narcotics; these drugs are smoke, inhaled, snorted, injected just beneath the skin, injected into the blood stream (injection seems to be the most common)
