PSY 034 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Intellectual Disability, Transvestism, Psychopathology
Document Summary
Psychopathology: concerns the nature of and development of abnormal behaviour, thoughts, and feelings. Abnormality is determined by the presence of several characteristics at once. These including: statistical infrequency, violation of norms, personal distress, disability or dysfunction, and unexpectedness. Abnormal behaviour is infrequent in the general population. Normal curve: distribution of a measurable trait depicting most people in the middle and fewat the extremes. When iq is below 70 they are considered to have mental retardation. Low intelligence is a principle criteria used to diagnose mental retardation. Consider if the behaviour violates social norms or threatens or makes anxious those observing it. Relative concept: various forms of unusual behaviour can be tolerated, and cultural diversity affects how social norms are viewed. Too broad and too narrow: ex. prostitutes violate social norms but are typically not studied in this eld, yet a highly anxious person is. Great distress and torment to the person experiencing it.
