PSY 005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Statistical Significance, Random Assignment, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Correlational research: research designed to measure the association between variables that are not manipulated by the researcher. Unlike descriptive research, correlational research measures the relationship between different variables. The extent to which variables relate to each other, or correlate, can suggest how similar or distinct 2 different measures are and how well one variable can be used to predict another. So, researchers doing correlational research typically does not manipulate measures, but rather they measure them. Correlation coefficient: a statistical measure of the strength and direction of the association between 2 variables. Correlation coefficient can range from -1. 0 to +1. 0. The absolute value of the number (the number itself without the positive or negative) indicates how strongly the 2 variables are associated. The larger the absolute value of the number, the stronger the association between 2 variables, and thus the better wither of the variables is as a predictor of the other.
