Document Summary

Us, members of diff nationalities or ethnic groups are expected to assimilate. In canada, cultural groups are encouraged to maintain their values and customs. Immigrant youth in this country fare best when they retain a sense of their own cultural identity as well as develop an identity as canadians. Low-prejudice students who had contemplated the benefits of multiculturalism communicated more warmth. Promoting multiculturalism seemed to backfire for the high-prejudice participants- they actually communicated less warmth to the aboriginal student compared to high-prejudice participants who didn"t receive this message. Exposed to the merits of multiculturalism actually felt that there were greater differences btw themselves and canadians who are of a diff colour than did participants in a control condition. The more similar the respondents perceived a group to be to their own group, the greater their willingness to associate w members of that group.
