Document Summary
A motive to protect or restore one"s sense of freedom. Arises when someone threatens our freedom of action. People want to be somewhat different from others. Makes majority think more deeply about minority position. Our tendency to unconsciously imitate others" expressions, postures, and voice tones, is a form of conformity. Initially a term for enhanced performance in the presence of others; now a broader term for the effect- positive or negative- of the presence of others on performance. The presence of others facilitates performance on simple tasks, but hinders performance on difficult tasks. In a hierarchy of responses, the response you are most likely to make. A concern about how we appear in the eyes of others- that is, about being evaluated. Being aware of another person"s presence creates a conflict between attending to that person and attending to the task at hand and that it is this attentional conflict that is arousing and that produces social facilitation effects.
