Document Summary

Smoking causes hypertension because nicotine acts as a vasoconstrictor and over time can harden your vessels. Cigarettes also can cause hyperlipidemia because toxins in cigarettes can attack hdl (good cholesterol) leaving ldl (bad cholesterol) in the blood. Ldl in the bloodstream causes adhesion and plaques to build in the vessels causing arteriosclerosis. Smoking can also cause diabetes, in particular type 2 diabetes, because it increases insulin resistance. Copd is caused by smoking related to emphysema. Over time continued smoking causes more irritation and inflammation to the point there. Inhaled smoke is a pollutant or irritant to the lining of the lungs that causes inflammation. is so much mucus buildup in the lungs it creates an obstruction. Anxiety is also caused by smoking due to withdrawals. Most people think smoking calms them down or relieves anxiety but in reality, that effect is short lived and anxiety from withdrawals start to build up the moment they stop smoking that cigarette.
