JOUR 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Daniel Okrent, George Gerbner, Coddling
Document Summary
With males as sources, more likely to be on front page. Effects of gender bias inaccurate reflection of society and reinforces a lower public status for women. Symbolic annihilation: george gerbner; small amount of diversity in the news, makes them absent in public sphere. 1980s-90s african americans reported as criminals: similar for latinos and arab muslims. Problem stems from lack of representation as sources in news. Latinos, asian americans, and native americans virtually never anchors, reporters, subjects, or sources. Majority of americans are working class, and they are most affected by economic labor issues reporting down, business up policies and crises. Hunger for scoops, front-page syndrome, hit-and-run journalism, coddling sources. Parachuting in during the heat of the fight and parachuting out when it"s slowing down; similar to hit-and-run. Knowledge-based journalism is putting news in context by applying knowledge of a subject area; asking why and not just who/what/when/where journalistic failures = failure to be prepared.
