Percieved expertise (college students vs. non-college students) Definition: tendency to interpret, favor, and recall information that confirms what we already believe. We see what we want to see. People believe there is a large bias in media. With media there seems to be a reversal of biased assimilation. Also, made it into a student essay. Journalist source people thought was very biased. Public might be more biased than media; aka we"re expressing our bias. Noelle neumann theorized that members of a group engage in a constant evaluation of the prevailing climate of opinion in the group. This is avoid the possible social isolation that could result from expressing an opinion that is contrary to the majority opinion. Individuals are more willing to express their opinions when they think others hold similar opinions, but this empirical reason is small.
