People need to make decisions to be able to govern themselves effectively, choose best leaders. Journalism provides an entity that can be a corrective influence on government. Allows people -- all people, not just those with power and money -- to be heard and have a voice. A place where both sides can be heard, understood, and eventually (hopefully) find common ground. A set of transparent, independent procedures aimed at gathering, verifying and reporting truthful information of consequence to citizens in a democracy. Chapter 2 journalism is just as important to democracy as democracy is important to journalism essay question. Journalism is not just a process of gathering and distributing information. Journalism is what happens between the time that you pick up something interesting tidbit of information and then pass it along. The checking, the questioning, the corroborating of information establishing that it is true is what makes is journalism.
