From 8th 10th centuries berbers and arabs content with peaceful trade. Early 11th century berbers set out on their path of conquest. 1078 almoravids capture kumbi, the capital. Devastation berbers plunder ghanians goods, submit them to all poll tax and compel many of them to convert to islam. Almoravids more raiders than rulers, cannon maintain their control and withdraw. 1230 the takrur from the senegal valley seized ghana and the 500+ year old empire ended. Semi-legendary ruler of a small mandinka state, kangaba, on the upper niger. 1240 defeats the takrur at the battle of kirina. Although muslim, the kings of mali still received authority through magic (power over the ancestors, etc. ) Controlled the gold-producing region and commanded the caravan routes. Two main cities timbuktu and djenne. Both centers of scholarship, many mosques, widely known and cosmopolitan. Timbuktu had one of the largest libraries in the world. Mali will go into decline after mansa musa.
