Amount of precipitation matched amount of evaporation on a global scale, global balance, water doesn"t come from outer space (almost all our water is salt water) (not a lot of water for us) Precipitation reaching the earths surface follows 2 basic pathways. When you think of precip, its any water coming from the sky, also fog. Along the way, interception occurs when precip hits plants or other ground cover. Drains across plant leaves and down stems to the ground = stem flow. Falls directly to the ground = throughfall. Water soaks into the ground through infiltration (penetration of soil surface) It travels further into soil or rock through the downward movement of percolation. Ex: the espresso machine and the cursing nh men. An effective way to assess water resources for any area of earth"s surface (everything from a continent to your backyard). Can examine any time frame (minutes to years) Think of it as a money budget.
