COMM 004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Intimate Exchanges, New Media, Theory-Theory
Document Summary
A collection of mediated technologies that are digital and converging and tend to be interactive. Media deficit approach: mediated communication is often less useful than f2f. Filtered: lack the capability of carrying nonverbal cues. Asynchronous: delay may occur between the time the message is sent and when it is responded to. -there are benefits to asynchronicity and filtering (time to ponder a response, and stereotypes may be left out) social network theory. The patterns of connections among people affect their social behavior and communication. The more people are socially connected to one another, the more likely they are to communicate using various media available to them. The more new media you use, the more friends you are likely to have and the less isolated you feel new media and the individual. Managing identity: we can control the amount of info we disclose about ourselves. Anonymity: bad behavior is possible, as is misrepresentation.
