High rates of alcoholism - because of systematic oppression and high rates of unemployment, not because its condoned in lakota culture. Up to 7 people living in one house. Informal economy - odd jobs (things you don"t pay taxes on) (dog walking, babysitting, mowing lawns) Always for some kind of life event. Collecting a lot of different things and items and give them all away at the party. Circulates the goods among the reservation; moves stuff around in an economy that is short of cash. Traditional cultural practice; staying in touch with lakota values. No one leaves empty handed; sharing emphasized. Lots of references to this in glover book. Dominated by women (informal economies are dominated by women) Women provide the most for the economy and the family; women tend to be the breadwinners. Men feel emasculated/frustrated/threatened; results in protest masculinity - domestic abuse tends to increase; men tend to discourage women from taking leadership positions.
