In a 5-4 decision, the court held that mr. lopez"s charge had to be reversed because that law was unconstitutional. The court found the federal gun-free school zones act to be unconstitutional in that the law exceeded congress" legislative power under the commerce clause. Concluded that the commerce clause allowed congress three broad categories in which to assert its power to regulate interstate commerce.
