1st and 2nd waves of colonialism: europe increased proportion of the earth"s surface it controlled from 37% in 1800 to 67% in. Independence (spanish colonies) or larger autonomy (canada) from europe. India: first conquered by east india company. 1858, eic liquidated and india becomes a british colony. In 1909 india consisted of contemporary india, pakistan, bangladesh and burma. Dutch east indies: dutch eic (private monopolistic company) controls jakarta and java, dutch eic dissolves in 1800. Scramble for africa: beginning of c19th, europeans start to venture inwards into africa. 1870"s: 1884/5 berlin conference formalises colonisation of africa. Why in the c19th: tech advances in weapons; maxim gun, gunboats, tech advances in logistic; steamboat, telegraph, advances in medical knowledge. Humanitarian and religious: end slave trade but europeans practiced forced labour in african colonies, protect religious missions. Consequence of capitalism: capital accumulates at home and searches higher profits out of europe. Hopkins (1968, 1973): scramble for africa explained by trade.
