Document Summary

A social autopsy of disaster in chicago by klinenberg. Ch. 2- race, place, and vulnerability : urban neighborhoods and the ecology of support. Cdc investigates risk factors for heat-related mortality in chicago. Goal: identify public health strategies for reaching people at risk and preventing deaths in future heat waves . About 700 heat wave victims in chicago. Conclusions: city residents more vulnerable, did not leave home daily, with medical problems, lacked ac or access to transportation. Sociological theories and qualitative research techniques make it possible to conduct a different kind of epidemiology. Not ending an investigation with individual level information, but adding a layer of regional or social ecological analysis to the study. Community studies designed to identify the mechanisms through which neighborhood conditions affect the health and security of residents require intensive fieldwork and deep engagements with local residents, institutions, and public places. Need to look at social connections and social support practices and not just attribute something to race/ethnicity.
