SOC 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: The Sociological Imagination
Document Summary
In mills" sociological imagination, i concur with his notion of looking at common everyday issues through not only a personal lens, but a broader lens applied to the much larger social world (mills 1959). Many of our issues may either stem from or consequently lead to a much larger issue socially. In the united states, for instance, there is a common issue of societal standards of beauty, particularly the standard of being fair and thin. An adolescent female who aspires to achieve the ideal fair and thin beauty standard, but realizes that she somehow cannot achieve this look, may turn to anorexic or severe health problems. Looking through a personal lens, her resulting health may be her own personal trouble. Looking through the lens of sociological imagination, this in reality is the result of society"s constant obsession with the ideal beauty standards. Perhaps, this is an issue that scrutinizes the attitude towards women shown in social media and daily life.
