PSYCH 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Orbicularis Oculi Muscle, Amygdala, Multidimensional Scaling
Document Summary
What is emotion: multidimensional scaling (what emotion is more like another) Show how close things are to each other. Reveal dimensions on which those things vary: valence (how positive or negative, arousal (how active or passive, suggests that definition of emotion must include two things: Experiences have characteristic levels of bodily arousal: emotion. Positive or negative experience that is associated with a particular pattern of physiological activity. Then in turn produces an emotional experience in brain. Emotional experience is consequence of physiological reactions. Different emotions are different experiences of differenet patterns of bodily activity: cannon-bard theory. Stimulus simultaneously triggers activity in the body and emotional experience in the brain. Emotions happen quickly even though body reacts slowly: blush and feeling embarrassed. People have difficulty accurately detecting bodily responses. Non-emotional stimuli can cause same bodily response as emotional stimuli do: we do(cid:374)"t get s(cid:272)ared when we have a fever.
