DEA 1500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Concept Map, Anthropometry, Affordance

113 views3 pages
Introduction to Earth
- Technology over time
- Making progress, but maybe not in the ways we want to
- Is the design going to promote safety, efficiency, health?
- Human Factors and Ergonomics
- Focus today: human-environment interaction, direct contact between a person
and the environment
- Where is your body in space?
- Ex: where your back hits the chair
- Cognitive Ergonomics
- Can I understand it/make sense/see how to use it? Am I using it the right
way?
- Anthropometrics and biomechanics
- Chart:
- Human factors/Ergonomics
- → health and safety
- → efficiency
- → comfort
Cognitive Ergonomics
1. How to figure out to design signs, technology, spaces, etc so that we know how to use it
2. Where is information?
a. One level up? One down? Straight ahead?
b. Up arrow, down arrow, “straight ahead” (sign examples)
3. Make the same information work much better
a. One arrow showing where everything is in that direction instead of arrows next to
every location
4. How do we make sense of, see how to use designs?
5. Principles
a. Legibility: can I see/comprehend what I am supposed to do to use the space?
i. Example: conference room with glass doors--cannot see/understand what
it is I am supposed to do in order to use the doorway
ii. Example: added dots to glass door in glass wall to make the door more
legible
iii. Example: add signs of how to use the door
iv. New York Subway Station
1. Monitoring if two trains are on the wrong track, going to hit each
other?
b. Affordance/Concept map
i. Affordance: what does the environment (technology, design, etc) tell you
about what you are supposed to do with it?
ii. Concept map: designer has a model inside their head of how people will
understand how to use the thing
