Much of what we know about the city of troy comes from homer"s poetry. Lived ~700 b. c. (early in the period of the greek city-states: his works were originally oral poetry, may have been illiterate, poems would have been spoken by bards, his poems weren"t written down until ~500 b. c. First greek civilization (mycenaeans) at height: 1450-1180 bc. Trojan war: 1210-1180 bc: homer: ~700 bc. Homer was singing about events that took place about 500 years before his lifetime. Additionally, writing disappeared from the greek world from 1100 bc - 800 bc. Consequently, some scholars were skeptical that homer"s stories were accurate. The following is evidence that there is some accuracy to. Homer"s stories: writing flourished in other areas, such as turkey, ~1000 bc, there was a large greek migration to the turkish coast. They planted colonies there: homer was one of the descendants of these colonists.
