Used to be more infections, influenza & pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc. Now, since people live older, the causes of death are more heart disease, cancer, stroke, etc. Antibiotics - but organisms evolved to be resistant. Show that the isolate causes diseases in healthy animals. Showed that if dead cells of a virulent strain and live cells of non virulent ones were added, the virulence can be transmitted. Showed that dna was the transforming principle (this was disregarded, as they thought dna was a structural element only. ) Found the entire sequence for a bacteriophage genome.
