Document Summary
Causes some chain reaction that transduces into the cell. Effector molecule does something in the cell and performs a function in the cell. Proteins, peptides amino acids, nucleotides, steroids, fatty acid derivatives, gases, even light are all signaling molecules. May alter gene expression, metabolism, cell shape/movement, etc. Signaling molecules are produced in signaling cells. Binds to cells w/receptors when come across. Signaling molecules are not sent to blood stream, are diffuses out into the vicinity. Autocrine signaling: can signal itself if it also has the receptors on itself. Neurotransmitters between nerve terminal and target cell. Synapse is the space between terminal and target. Can only signal cells in immediate contact. Cells respond to signal molecules only if they contain the receptor for that signal. Each cell only has a limited set of receptors. The ability of a cell to respond to a particular signal depends on: Receptor for acetylcholine on pacemaker cells decrease the rate of firing.
